Purple Calla Lilies
All about purple calla lilies
Purple calla lilies are beautiful flowers that make great additions to any bouquet or flower garden. They have large green leaves covered with spots and grow from a bulb. Purple calla lilies also have very thick stems and flowers that look like a colorful trumpet cascading out of the top of the stem.
There are two ways to grow purple calla lilies. The easiest way is to simply purchase bulbs. The wonderful thing about growing flowers from bulbs is that you can always dig up the bulbs and replant them somewhere else if you ever need to move the flowers for any reason. Purple calla lilies are very hardy plants, which means you may also want to purchase them in plant form from your garden center. Their hardiness makes these flowers very easy to transplant into your garden.
If you really love a challenge in your flower garden, then you can always grow purple calla lilies from the seeds. This is quite a bit more difficult than growing them from bulbs, but the result is just as spectacular. You can often find calla lily seeds at your garden center. They come in a wide variety of colors and sizes.
Growing calla lilies from seeds starts with a step called pregrow. It involves placing the seeds on a wet paper towel that is spread out on a plate. Then you cover the seeds with another wet paper towel. Place the plate in a cool, dark place and wait. It’s very important that the paper towels are wet, but not soaking. You may have to add more water after a day, but just make sure that you never completely soak the paper towels. Within a couple of days, you’ll see the seeds start to grow. The seeds that don’t start growing are duds and can be thrown out.
Once your seeds are started, it’s time to plant them in a pot. Use potting soil that contains fertilizer to get the best growth from your calla lilies. Instead of pouring water on them while they’re growing, just use a spray bottle to dampen the soil. It’s very important that the flower seeds get enough moisture, but not too much.
As soon as the flowers are strong enough to withstand another transplanting, then it’s time to move them outside. You also may want to just put them in a larger pot so you can enjoy them inside your home.
Once your lilies are growing, then it’s very important to keep the soil damp all the time. You don’t want it to be so wet that your flowers are washed away, but you do need to give them plenty of moisture. Calla lilies grow in just about any kind of soil, so you’ll find it very easy to care for them once you get to the growing stage. If you live in a warmer climate, your calla lilies may even bloom all year round! If it does, make sure you give it plenty of extra nutrition since it doesn’t have a dormant season to use for recharging.
